“What needed to be done”
Originally established in 1907, YMCA of the Rockies extended their facilities during the 1960’s with the addition of the aquatic center. Supported by a cement base, the decking, gutters, and pool interior were laid with small brown and green 1’ x 1’ tile covering the entire surface of the facility, giving it a dark and unappealing appearance. After decades of use, the tile began de-laminating and falling off, exposing surface cracks and causing leaks. Chipped tile in the pool basin had rotten so severely that the pool floor underneath had created a hole through to the basement level.
The cost of removing all of the existing tiling and replacing it with new tile was cost prohibitive. The pool basin was in such poor condition that resurfacing with a Cement-Based material was not practical. Instead, a white INTER-GLASS® interior accented with navy blue racing lanes, transition lines and tiling along with a light beige decking became the perfect solution to brighten up the facility.

“How it was done”
Tiling along the deck and gutter were completely removed along with the crumbling deteriorated concrete, which was then re-poured and smoothed over before being finished with a Texture-Dek deck topping, the texture of which was custom selected by the YMCA of the Rockies to fit the needs of their indoor facility. Tiles along the gutter edges were replaced to show the transition from deck edge, to the gutters edge, to the water as a safety precaution.
Once the loose and damaged tile was removed from the pool interior, racing lane and waterline tile was installed. To bring the pool up to code transition lines were added demarcating a steep change in pool depth. A protective barrier and multi-axial fabrics were then applied to the pool interior followed by smoothing putty and our INTER-GLASS® Reinforced Polymeric System. This leaves the pool interior silky smooth showing no evidence of the small 1’ x 1’ tile resting underneath it.
